D.O. Monterrei

D.O. Monterrei is located in the south-east of the province of Ourense, in Galicia, in the Verín valley, next to the border with Portugal. It is one of the smallest Galician appellations and stands out for its Godello whites and Mencía reds.

The white varieties are Godello, Treixadura, Doña Blanca, Albariño, Blanca de Monterrei, Caíño Blanco and Loureira. The authorised red varieties include Mencía, Merenzao, Tempranillo, Caíño Tinto and Sousón.

The area has a transitional climate between Atlantic and continental, with hot, dry summers and cold winters. This combination, together with marked temperature swings during ripening, produces wines with aromatic richness, freshness, body and a good balance between alcohol and acidity.
