D.O. Yecla
The D.O. Yecla is located in the north of the Región de Murcia and covers the wines of the municipality of Yecla. Its great star is Monastrell, the area's main red variety, which produces intense, fruity reds of strong Mediterranean character.
The vineyards lie at roughly 535 to 870 metres of altitude. The soils are predominantly limestone, deep, permeable and poor in organic matter, conditions particularly well suited to the vine.
The climate is dry continental with Mediterranean influence: hot summers, cold winters, annual rainfall of around 300 mm and high sunshine. The marked temperature swing favours balanced ripening of the grapes.
Besides the reds, there are also fresh, fruity Monastrell rosés; whites made from varieties such as Macabeo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or Verdejo; and even Monastrell liqueur wines.
