Description

Martínez Lacuesta Selecto Crianza 2023 is one of the most representative red wines from the historic Bodegas Martínez Lacuesta, founded in 1895 in Haro, the heart of Rioja Alta. A century-old winery that has been shaping the history of Riojan wine for over a hundred years from one of its most iconic locations, with a philosophy that combines respect for traditional techniques with a contemporary sensitivity to terroir and the vineyard.

Made from a selection of 90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano, and 5% Mazuelo grapes from the winery's own vineyards located in Haro and the surrounding area, in the Rioja Alta sub-zone, on clay-limestone soils at altitudes between 450 and 600 metres, with vines averaging 25–30 years old. The viticulture is environmentally conscious, respecting the plant's natural cycles and promoting an authentic expression of the Riojan terroir.

The winemaking is classic and precise: manual harvesting with selection of the bunches in the vineyard and winery. Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and varietal aromas. The wine then undergoes 12 to 14 months of ageing in 225-litre American oak barrels, where it acquires its characteristic spicy and toasted notes, perfectly integrated with the fruit. It finishes with at least 6 months of ageing in the bottle before release, ensuring balance and harmony among all its components.

It has an intense ruby-red colour with garnet highlights, bright and clear. On the nose, it is elegant and complex, with aromas of ripe red fruit such as cherry, raspberry, and blackcurrant, accompanied by vanilla, sweet spices—clove and pepper—and a subtle toasted background of cocoa and licorice from its time in the barrel. On the palate, it is balanced, structured, and easy-drinking, with soft, rounded tannins, good acidity that provides freshness, well-integrated notes of ripe fruit and spices, and a long, persistent finish with balsamic notes. A classic Riojan crianza, reliable and offering excellent value for money.

Serving temperature: 16–18°C. Ideal with red meats, white meats, roasted or sauced game birds and large game, cured meats, semi-cured cheeses, and oily fish.
